Welcome . . .

. . . as we prepare to ring in the year 2010.  Thanks to you all for a wonderful winter season so far.  We've enjoyed holiday festivities and winter activities . . .We hope that you have also enjoyed a fine holiday season, and we do look forward to sharing this new year's happenings & happiness[es] with you all!

"Green" Tip of the Month:

Appliance maintenance . . . did you know that a simple vacuum cleaning can help your refrigerator work more efficiently?  Cleaning the coils will help your fridge condenser to do its job.  SImilarly, cleaning the coils of your air conditioning unit outside [rinsing off the dirt and buildup] will aid the unit's cooling efficiency.

Winter Specials Reminder:

Don't forget to check out the Winter Specials section of our website.  We have great ideas for your next winter sports excursion or active family vacation . . . come "Ski 'n Stay" with us!

Area Attractions:

This month we are highlighting two upcoming local opportunities for seasonal fun: one an annual event to mark on your calendar, right around the corner from us at the Musterfield Farm, and the other a weekend of snowshoeing fun here at the Inn.

  • Ice-cutting at Musterfield: The annual adventure, taking place on January 24 this year, is sure to draw its usual crowds.  Join in the historic fun of chopping the ice from our own Kezar Lake: the ice is stored year-round at the Farm, in traditional manner, so this is an event you don't want to miss, with food and fun for the whole family! Go to the Musterfield Farm Homepage for details.
  • Snowshoeing with Ginger's Journeys: Ginger Lang, a 15-year veteran of outdoor activity-leading, will this year be offering a Snowshoeing Adventure here at Follansbee!  The weekend is happening March 11-12, and promises to be a great time of outdoor action, along with "Inn"-door refreshments and relaxation.  You can book your spot now, and find details, or other event information, at Ginger's Journeys' website.

A Follansbee Recipe:

A "Fun for the whole family" recipe.  With the added benefit that you get to eat them too :-)

GINGERBREAD PEOPLE

  • 3/4 c. butter, softened
  • 3/4 c. firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1 (3.9 oz) pkg Jell-O Butterscotch  Flavor Pudding
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon ground ginger
  • 1 and  1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

  1. Beat butter, sugar, dry pudding mix and egg in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed, until well blended.  Combine remaining ingredients.  Gradually add to pudding mixture, beating well after each addition; cover.  Refrigerate one hour or until dough is firm.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.  Roll out dough on lightly floured surface to 1/4-inch thickness.  Cut into gingerbread shapes with 4-inch cookie cutter.  Place on greased baking sheets.  Use a straw to make a hole near the top of each cookie to use for hanging.
  3. Bake 10 to 12 minutes, or until edges are lightly browned.  Remove from baking sheets.  Cool on wire racks.  Decorate as desired.
  4. Yield: About 20 cookies, depending on the size of your cookie cutter!
